Potassium sulfate #CAS7778-80-5
Potassium sulfate (K₂SO₄), also known as sulphate of potash or arcanite, is a colorless crystalline solid that melts at 1072 °C (1960 °F). It is soluble in water but insoluble in alcohol. As a common constituent of potassium-containing minerals, it is used in the manufacture of glass, aluminum, fertilizers, and medicinal products.
Potassium sulfate is an inorganic salt that can be prepared by reacting phosphogypsum and potassium chloride. It forms needlelike mullite particles on heating with aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3) and silicon dioxide (SiO2). Its application to the soil has been reported to minimize the bronzing of rice plants. Its surface integration growth kinetics has been obtained in the temperature range of 20-50°C. The theoretical heat capacity curve of potassium sulfate in vapor phase has been obtained.
Application of Potassium sulfate
Potassium Sulfate is a flavoring agent that occurs naturally, consisting of colorless or white crystals or crystalline powder having a bitter, saline taste. it is prepared by the neutralization of sulfuric acid with potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate.Technical grades are used in fertilizers for manufacture of potassium alum, potassium carbonate and glass; the reagent grade is used in the Kjeldahl determination of nitrogen.potassium sulfate is a reagent in cosmetics. Potassium sulfate is an inorganic salt with a primary function as a viscosity-increasing agent. In agriculture, potassium sulphate is used as a chemical fertilizer. It helps cash crops achieve consistent high quality and high yield, and is suitable for tea, vegetables, fruits and other crops. In analytical testing, it is applied in serum protein biochemical assays, determination of serum potassium and other potassium salts, and as a catalyst for the Kjeldahl nitrogen determination method. Besides, it can be used as an intermediate in the dyestuff industry, a clarifying agent in the glass industry, an auxiliary agent in the perfume industry, and a laxative in pharmaceuticals. It is also used as a general additive in the food industry and for serum protein biochemical tests. It acts as an essential raw material for producing various potassium salts, including potassium alum, potassium carbonate, potassium persulphate and potassium hydroxide. In the printing and dyeing and textile industry, it is adopted as a dyeing auxiliary and levelling agent. In ceramics and glaze production, it works as a flux to lower melting temperature and improve glaze smoothness. In the glass industry, besides being a clarifying agent, it also serves as a flux for special optical glass. It can be added into cement and gypsum-based building materials to adjust setting time and improve material stability. It is also used in detergent formulation and water treatment as an auxiliary mineral additive. In cosmetic industry, it can be used as a viscosity regulator. Additionally, it is applied in the manufacture of potassium soap, and used as a muzzle flash suppressant in special military formulations. It can also be used as a reference standard reagent for fertilizer quality inspection and ion calibration in analytical laboratories.
