Plasticisers are mostly stable oily substances under normal temperature and pressure. They are generally insoluble in water, and miscible with most organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone and mineral oil. Different types have slight differences in chemical resistance. They are chemically inert under normal storage and processing conditions and do not readily react with PVC and other polymer matrices. They are sensitive to strong oxidising agents, strong acids and strong alkalis. Under high-temperature or long-term heating conditions, they may undergo hydrolysis, thermal decomposition or volatilisation. Some varieties can migrate slowly out of polymer products over time. They are non‑corrosive to common carbon steel packaging materials. Most grades are combustible, and fine vapour mixtures in the air may form flammable atmospheres. They should be stored in a cool, dry and ventilated warehouse, kept away from open flames, heat sources and strong oxidants.

Application of Plasticizer

Plasticiser is one of the most widely used processing additives for plastic manufacturing, especially for PVC resin. When blended into polymer matrix, it inserts between polymer molecular chains, weakens the intermolecular attraction, reduces the glass transition temperature and melt viscosity of the resin, improves the flexibility, elongation, low‑temperature resistance and processability of plastic compounds. It enables rigid PVC to be converted into soft and semi‑flexible plastic products, which greatly expands the application range of PVC materials. It is widely used to produce plastic films, sheets, artificial leather, hoses, cables and wire insulation layers, sealing strips, soft plastic toys, flooring materials and coated fabrics. It can lower the plastic processing temperature, reduce equipment energy consumption and ease extrusion, calendering and injection moulding operations. Different types of plasticisers can be selected according to different requirements: some grades provide excellent cold resistance, some offer low volatility and good extraction resistance, and environmentally friendly types can meet stricter migration limits. It has good compatibility with PVC stabilisers, lubricants, fillers and colourants in plastic formulations. Besides PVC, it can also be applied in cellulose plastics, rubber, coatings and adhesives to adjust softness and film-forming performance. It should be noted that different grades have different compliance standards; certain ordinary plasticisers are not suitable for food‑contact, medical or children’s articles.
