Cetearyl alcohol #CAS67762-27-0
Cetearyl Alcohol is a mixed long‑chain saturated fatty alcohol mainly composed of cetyl alcohol (C16) and stearyl alcohol (C18). It is practically insoluble in water, freely soluble in hot ethanol, ether, chloroform and fatty oils. It melts into a clear fluid at 48–56 °C. It has excellent stability across neutral, weakly acidic and weakly alkaline systems. As an aliphatic alcohol, it can undergo esterification reaction with carboxylic acids under suitable catalytic and heating conditions. It shows good oxidation resistance under normal sealed storage; prolonged exposure to high temperature, strong light and air will trigger slow oxidation, leading to yellowing and rancidity. It does not hydrolyze easily under conventional cosmetic processing temperature. It is compatible with almost all oil‑soluble raw materials, non‑ionic surfactants, anionic surfactants, humectants and cosmetic active ingredients. It has low reactivity and mild chemical property, and will not irritate skin when used within recommended dosage. It is not hygroscopic under normal humidity conditions.
Application of Cetearyl alcohol
cetearyl alcohol (cetostearyl alcohol) is an emulsifying and stabilizing wax produced from the reduction of plant oils and natural waxes. Also used as an emollient and to give high viscosity to a finished product. Cetearyl alcohol is a mixture of fatty alcohols consisting primarily of cetyl and stearyl alcohols.Cetearyl alcohol (cas# 67762-27-0) is a fatty alcohol which is understood to cause contact dermatitis. Ceteryl alcohol also appears in the preparation of solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers and nanoemulsion of lornoxicam for transdermal delivery.
Cetearyl Alcohol is a mixture of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol, widely used as co‑emulsifier, thickener, stabilizer and consistency regulator in cosmetic and personal care systems. It is a classic oil‑phase raw material for oil‑in‑water emulsions. It can thicken the emulsion matrix, reduce fluidity and improve the structural stability of cream and lotion, effectively preventing phase separation during storage and temperature cycling. It imparts soft, non‑greasy emollient feel on the skin, avoids the slippery residue brought by some synthetic thickeners, and improves the spreadability of creams and lotions. It is commonly added to moisturizing cream, repairing lotion, hand cream, body butter, facial mask cream, baby cream and sensitive‑skin skincare products.
In hair care formulations, cetearyl alcohol acts as conditioning agent. It deposits evenly on hair cuticles, fills rough gaps, softens dry and coarse hair, reduces tangling, static electricity and dry frizz. It enhances hair smoothness and wet combing performance, so it is frequently used in hair conditioner, hair mask, leave‑in hair treatment and smoothing serum. It does not create heavy coating, so it will not weigh hair down easily.
It is also applied in other industrial sectors. In pharmaceutical topical ointments, it serves as base matrix, thickener and emollient. In textile processing, it can be used as softener and lubricant for fiber finishing. It is compatible with various surfactants, moisturizers, plant oils, active extracts and preservatives. It is stable in conventional production processes and can work synergistically with primary emulsifiers to build robust emulsion systems.
